Party on the Odyssey!
Do you love weddings? How about the receptions? What if I told you that you can enjoy everything you love about wedding receptions minus the gift and oh yeah the bride and groom? Recently I boarded the Odyssey Chicago to check out their 2 million dollar renovation and maybe have a cocktail or two. Within minutes I felt like I was at a floating wedding reception! Follow me as I check out the upgrades and imagine the sounds of Kool and the Gang playing in your ears.
The Odyssey is definitely an experience. You dress up, walk a long runway, get your picture taken, and then get a complimentary glass of strawberry champagne. Upon entering the Sapphire room many of the upgrades were evident like the updated bar with plasma TV’s, LED lighting, and a pretty cool lit up dance floor. A walk to the top deck features a modern rooftop lounge with comfortable seating and soft lighting perfect for taking in our city’s beautiful skyline or the Navy Pier fireworks display.
A major focus on the renovation was the menu. The menu features locally sourced ingredients and the wine and beer selection has been expanded as well. While a beer normally sounds good to me I was more in the cocktail mood tonight so my drink of choice was a combination of Olmeca Altos Reposado Tequila, Crème de Cassis, fresh lime juice, and simple syrup served on the rocks and topped with Goslings Ginger Beer otherwise known as the El Diablo! Pretty darn delicious and more than one may have been consumed tonight!
While I have fun at wedding receptions the food very often leaves you flat. You usually don’t get to order but are served whatever was chosen for everyone. We start the night with the chef’s tasting that features cauliflower puree, tapenade, and crudité snap vegetables artfully served. Think of it as an upscale veggies and dip. There are 7 entrée choices with both the lobster and the short ribs catching the eye of my wife and I. The 14oz tender Main lobster tail is roasted with a blue crab crust and paired with sweet cream butter. I chose the beef short ribs topped with a horseradish crust and demi-glace. Why don’t I get lobster and short ribs at every wedding? Maybe I should file a grievance with someone?
Before dessert a little dancing is in order. So if you still doubt that this is a floating wedding let me tell you that we did the Electric Slide, the Cha Cha slide, danced to “Endless Love”, and heard at least 2 Kool and the Gang songs! Sure there were current hits played as well but aforementioned songs check all my wedding requirements.
Time for dessert via the chocolate fountain! Dip strawberries, Rice Crispies, marshmallows, and more until you’ve had your fill. Ok, so no cake throws my wedding theme off a bit but otherwise I’m spot on! Prices vary on date, time, package, and how many are in your party but plan for around $58 per person for lunch and $89 for dinner to start. So if you miss the wedding reception but none of your friends are tying the knot soon check out the Odyssey to get your fix!
