David Burke's New Sandwich Shop - Burke's Bacon Bar
Ladies, if you see a gentleman walking through River North carefully carrying what looks like a cupcake box, please forgive us for the confusion. Instead of delivery the sweet treats normally reserved for small white boxes, he's carrying savory bacon filled awesomeness from the new Burke's Bacon Bar (BBB).
Located in that used to be the entrance to J Bar, BBB is carry-out shop featuring bacon-centric salads, desserts and bite-size sandwiches, or as they call them handwiches.
With a wall of freshly smoked and cured meat hanging in the back, the small store has a relaxed but upscale vibe complete with a bouncer in the corner and the supermodels passing through. Confused? Don't be.
The bouncer works for the internationally known scene-maker Lono Brazil and the supermodels are most likely Brazil's friends on their way to the secret new club Jimmy. But more about that at a later date.
The bite size handwiches are priced at $4 a pop or a box of three for $11. Skeptical that three small sandwiches and a banana could make for a fulfilling dinner, I threw down $13 and departed with what looked like a supermodel sized dinner.
Without knowing it, I left with a box of the best sandwiches I've had since my first trip to Perry's Deli in 2010.
Armed with the Angry Reuben, Beef n’ Cheddar and Hot Turkey Roll Wrap, my little white box was filled with bite size explosions of flavor! The hot turkey wrap with lemon aïoli and apple slices on a fresh corn tortilla was refreshing on a mild summer night and it will only get better as the weather cools off. And since there's never a bad time for braised pork with crispy onions and Matilda bacon, you won't be disappointed with the large Beef n' Cheddar handwich overflowing with tender meat. Of the three, the Angry Reuben was the smallest but it packed a mighty punch with beef pastrami, spicy bacon kraut and Swiss cheese on marbled rye.
In retrospect, the flavors are big, the options are awesome and the three sandwich option is enough to fill you up for dinner. The only small things associated the BBB is the list on Mr. Brazil's clipboard and the waists that pass by his bouncer.
