First of all, this is the most relaxing restaurant in the city. You can go there, have a great meal for under $15, then order coffee and a stellar pastry and sit and talk for hours with your dinner partner over superior coffee and service. Being in the Aloft Hotel, you’d think chrome and glass, stark and clean lines, right? Noooo, this is the kind of eatery that could exist only if all of us social media and tech peeps put our heads together: we’d want affordable top-notch food & not salty-bloaty! We’d want comfortable mismatched chic & not concrete echo-y walls and hard chairs! We’d also want to be able to work on our laptops or smart phones or enjoy our friends & not be rushed! Yes, yes, yes!!!
I’m sorry, I get so emotional just thinking about how wonderful a place like this might be if it actually existed: AND IT DOES! Beatrix is the new restaurant for you and for me—and it’s like we would have designed it ourselves—but we didn’t.
Oh, I forgot to mention, Beatrix is one of Lettuce Entertain You’s newest endeavors. Yuh-huh! No wonder it “works.” Price + calm + attracting the tech crowd + great food! Chef partners Susan Weaver, Rita Dever and John Chiakulas have come together in one restaurant and they bring with them years of experience from Lettuce Entertain You’s very own test kitchen.
I’ve already been there for lunch, brunch and dinner. I should mention, they have carry out and gluten free meals. But I always recommend ordering a few things, even if you share, and order desert because you are definitely going to want to take some goodies home with you. Rita Dever, although a great chef (and a hair client of mine) she has a super-special magic-mojoity with pastries. This lady makes the best chocolate cake in the City of Chicago. (I was biased too: I used to think Portillo’s was the bomb.) And, thank god, I took a picture of the pastry selection the last time I went. The Beatrix website does not do the deserts justice. GET: Tall, Dark & Handsome Chocolate Cake & any of the Cinnamon Roll combinations. Three times I have taken these deserts home, and they were as good the next day as when I ate them in the restaurant. (Don’t share them—ever.)
Check out the BEATRIX menu online. GET: Golden Tomato Gazpacho, when it’s in season. Poached Farm Egg and Truffled Pasta. And any burger or skirt steak with the Kennebec fries. The menu seems simple enough, but they use the best prime and fresh ingredients so everything has a gourmet-and-sautéed to perfection flavor; you’d think you were in France or Italy.
This is the new restaurant you will have to try ASAP. Tell Rita I sent you and tell her to bring me some chocolate cake the next time she gets her hair done!
