On July 13th, Alcott's Field of Dreams, a nonprofit will hold a Swing-a-Thon in hopes of raising funds for its new community athletic field located in Lincoln Park. Now, before you put on your Lindy Hop records, this Swing-a-Thon is a little different. In conjunction with Rebell Conditioning, a local Kettlebell strength and conditioning gym, its members will actually swing a kettlebell for 30 minutes. This unique Kettlebell Swing-a-Thon has gained the attention and support of many Lake View and Lincoln Park businesses who see tremendous value in what the Field of Dreams project is trying to accomplish. It is about neighborhoods. People pick neighborhoods, not just houses.
This goes beyond relying fully on Chicago Public Schools (CPS) to rebuild the field, as this project reaches deeply into the community. Not only are local business seeing the good in this project, but it has gained tremendous support from Mike Quigley, Congressman, Illinois 5th District stating “Green space in the City of Chicago is limited and I think it is important to take advantage and utilize space that already exists to better the school and the surrounding community.”
Alderman Michele Smith, 43rd Ward threw in $300,000 for this project stating "[t]he benefit of additional open space for not only Alcott students but additionally the community will be immeasurable. "This is an enhancement for our entire community..."
Supporters such as Rebell Conditioning, Kuma's Too and The Peasantry understand the value of improving the local community, and have graciously donated to the cause, and welcome the community improvements. Michael Diversey's is also offering 20% of its earnings on July 13th back to the Field of Dreams. (Just make sure you mention either "Alcott" or "Rebell"!)
The Field of Dreams has been successful in raising funds for phase one of the project, which is an outside amphitheater. The focus is now on phase two of the project, which includes a new athletic field estimated at $1.2 million. The field is meant for the entire community to use and enjoy.
Let’s help build the Dream, and improve the neighborhood’s quality of life and make it a community of choice. Here is how you can help. You may donate at http://alcottfieldofdreams.com or feel free to pledge for the actual Swing-A-Thon by contacting Alicia Haruska at firstname.lastname@example.org. I will also be participating, so can pledge towards my swings. But, you may want to pledge a flat amount versus per swing!
