5 Places to Celebrate National Grilled Cheese Day in Chicago

If there’s any food deserving of its own national holiday, that would be grilled cheese. Oooey, gooey, cheese in between the crispy bite of grilled bread. When done right (and it’s hard to do wrong) it’s a delicious comfort food so good it gets its own month. April is National Grilled Cheese Month, and April 12 specifically is National Grilled Cheese Day.

Here’s where you can celebrate National Grilled Cheese Day in Chicago:

Benny’s Chop House
444 N Wabash Ave
Grilled cheese is decadent. LOBSTER grilled cheese is decadence squared. Benny’s is $14.95 and layered with citrus mayonaisse and Prairie Pure Butterkäse. (pictured above)

Birchwood Kitchen
2211 W North Ave
Stop into this Wicker Park BYOB for Chef Jesse William’s Grilled Gruyere sandwich. It features onion jam with mustard roasted kale on sourdough for $8. Make it meaty and add ham for $2.

SideDoor
100 E Ontario St
This cool gastro-pub attached to Lawry’s Prime Rib is offering grilled cheese alongside its natural counterpart, tomato soup. You get not one, but two tastings in this Grilled Cheese Duo only available on Sunday. One is filled with Midnight Moon, smoked cheddar, and black olive tapenade. The other with Cowda, italico, Dijon, and both are served on sourdough bread.

Stout Barrel House and Galley
642 N Clark St
At Stout two slices of bread just get in the way. They’ve got an open-faced grilled cheese made with Camembert, cheddar cheese and red onion confit. Dress it up with short rib for $4 or bacon for $2, and add a side of mac and cheese (MORE CHEESE) for $2.

Timothy O’Toole’s
622 N Fairbanks Ct
Go big or stay home with a foot-long grilled cheese sandwich (that’s a lot of cheese) served with tomato basil soup for just $12.
