Evanston’s The Barn Steakhouse adds a special prix fixe menu

Chicago is renowned for some of the finest steakhouses in the world. We often forget, however, that the Chicago suburbs should also be included in that accolade.

The Barn Steakhouse, with an unobtrusive entrance located at the rear of 1016 Church Street in Evanston, offers one of the finest steakhouse experiences in the Chicago region. No surprise, since The Barn is the creation of Amy Morton, daughter of legendary restauranteur Arnie Morton (founder of Morton’s Steakhouses).

Set inside a restored 19th century brick barn, the Evanston restaurant features Heritage Black Angus steaks from local purveyor Meats by Linz, as well as other superb dishes ranging from Bison Bolognese and Steak Tartare to Roasted Vegetables Provençal and an array of seafood offerings.

The restaurant has a strong commitment to sustainability and sources everything possible seasonally and from local purveyors.

The décor is outstanding. The juxtaposition between the exposed brick and the elegant, understated furniture creates a charming and unique experience.

One of the outstanding features (other than the life-sized painting of a llama) is the spectacular chandelier over the main dining room. The two-story high wine racks and other décor in the bar area are equally beautiful.

The Barn Steakhouse feels like a “special occasion” restaurant, but with accessible pricing that makes it a perfect spot for any night.

Disclosure: Tommy’s visit was hosted, but all opinions are his own.

On a recent visit, I had the pleasure of sampling their new prix-fixe “early bird” menu. For only $30, patrons can sample some of The Barn’s most celebrated offerings in a three-course experience.

This menu is only available Sunday through Friday from 5 p.m. – 6 p.m. and the serving sizes are slightly smaller than the full entrée portions, but still incredibly satisfying.

The evening begins with a Little Gem Salad. You can ask for either bacon or white anchovies to be added (or both, if you are adventurous).

The second course is choice among Roasted Branzino, New York Strip Steak “Manhattan Cut”, or Za’atar Roasted Chicken.

Finally, choose between “Arnie’s” Chocolate Velvet Cake or Pecan Streusel Carrot Cake for a sweet finish. When you visit, ask your server to tell you the story behind the chocolate cake recipe. It’s a fun foodie ‘factoid.’
