When is a sandwich not just a sandwich? When it’s served in a cool environment, in a great location, with a creative Chef, and paired with craft beer.
Jerry’s Sandwiches hosted our most recent Chef’s Table event in their new Lincoln Square location. Named after the one and only Jerry Garcia, the space is comfortable and eclectic in one of the most comfortable and eclectic neighborhoods in Chicago. In the winter they’ve got a fireplace, and during the summer their Giddings Plaza location will give them prime patio seating with a view of the fountain. Some of the chandeliers made of bicycle tires, others are made of spoons and ladles, there are tables made from old bowling alley lanes, and there’s a stuffed Jerry in a pastry case (of course).
All of this would be for naught if the food was meh, but it’s not. Their butternut squash soup, slightly chunky with a hint of nutmeg, is the perfect winter warmer.
At the event we tried a variety of their sandwiches. All of them are on the menu, and you can also request one of your own design. The vegetarian selection we were offered, with a combination of cashew butter, apple, and chipotle chutney, was a surprising combination and unexpectedly tasty. The group also really enjoyed the Sandra O with fried chicken and Korean BBQ sauce. If you’re a meat lover, the hot steak with melted cheese should definitely be on your wish list. Our guests also enjoyed the Ken K and its house-hickory smoked salmon and avocado.
Sandra O: Fried chicken, Korean BBQ sauce, sliced cucumber, cider slaw, cheddar, citrus may, Sriracha hot sauce, baguette
Ken K: House-hickory smoked salmon, avocado, arugula, fresh mozzarella, lettuce, barbecue sauce, multi-grain
Diego: Grilled steak, avocado, cilantro, cheddar, lettuce, chipotle chutney, Cholula hot sauce, baguette
Larry D: Cashew butter, Granny Smith apple, confit onion, basil, cheddar, lettuce, chipotle chutney, multigrain
Side dishes include kale cole slaw, mac ‘n cheese, and caramelized bourbon sweet potatoes. These were followed by an assortment of brownies, bars, and cookies.
While they offer an extensive craft beer selection with several on-tap, Jerry’s is also family-friendly with a dedicated menu just for kids.
