On Wednesday evening the nominees and honorees of the 31st Annual Chicago Music Awards were announced. The press conference took place at NBC5 Chicago at the NBC Tower. John Blue topped the list of nominees showing up in three categories – R&B Entertainer of the Year, Best Male Vocalist, and Songwriter of the Year. Two new categories have been added to this year’s program, that of Pop Superstar of the Year, and Best Jazz/Blues Superstar of the Year. Also announced were those to receive the Lifetime Achievement Awards: Thomas (Tom Tom) Washington producer and arranger; William Mason, general director of Lyric Opera; Professor W. James McPhatter, formerly of The Caravans; Michael Romano, Latin Jazz Society founder; Chicago Recording Company (CRC), the Midwest’s largest recording company; and the Chicago Reader. The Award of Honor will be presented to R&B vocalist Miki Howard. Kanye West, nominated in the Pop Superstar of the Year category, will receive the Producer’s Special Award.
For the first time in the CMA’s history is the Chicago Emerging Star Competition, a gateway for younger performers or those just entering the industry. First round eliminations will take place on November 20th before a live audience and a panel of professional judges.
The Chicago Music Awards will take place on Sunday, January 15th 2012 at The Club located at 4829 W. 77th Street, directly across from Ford City Mall. For 31 years the CMA has honored Chicago’s own established and emerging musical artists. The Awards also recognizes producers, songwriters, disc, jockeys, nightclubs, radio stations and other allied industries that support musical artists. It is dedicated to “Health Awareness” to raise consciousness about the lack of health care in the entertainment industry.
