Take your tastebuds back in time this Thursday at The Field Museum of Natural History. They’ve partnered with Off Color Brewing to bring you a beer that will bring you as close to a Zhou Dynasty-era brew as is legally possible.
QingMing is a beer inspired by artifacts discovered during archeological digs in Taixi and a Changzikou tomb dating from the Late Shang/Western Zhou Dynasties circa 1600-722 bce. Many of the ingredients and flavorings being used at the time are not currently legal to use in beer production, so Off Color Brewing has created an amalgam based on the lessons learned from both archaeological sites.
At Hop To It at The Field Museum – Release of QingMing by Off Color Brewing you can taste the local brewery’s unique interpretation of ancient Asian brewing techniques, a taste profile of peaches and lemon rind with fragrant aromas of tea, bubblegum and sake, and take home a souvenir glass specifically created for this event.

You’ll also be able to see drinking vessels from the time period, like tea and wine pots, as well as ceramic models of graneries and other behind the scene collections from The FIeld Museum. Gary Feinman, Curator of East Asian Anthropology and Jamie Kelly, Head of Anthropological Collections at The Field Museum, will be on hand to discuss the artifacts and history and research behind these objects.
Beer fans will get the chance to meet John Laffler and Dave Bleitner, owners of Off Color Brewing, and John will talk about the inspiration behind this unique beer.
The event is Thursday, July 13, from 6pm to 8:30pm at The Field Museum of Natural History, 1400 S Lake Shore Dr. Tickets are $35 for members and $40 for non-members. In addition to the collector’s glass and taste of QingMing, light appetizers will be served and additional beverages are available for purchase.
Attendees of our AlphaBeer XVI event on August 12 will also get to try this unique beer!
