The holidays are over, and the long stretch of winter is upon us. And while I tend to consume ice cream year round, I know that many are replacing frozen treats with hot beverages. Good news! There is a gelato shop in Chicago that completely understands! At FRÍO Gelato, Chicagoland’s spot for Argentinian gelato, keeping warm doesn’t mean leaving your favorite flavor behind. This season drink your gelato warm! From a cup of coffee sweetened with a scoop or two to a sweet-as-can-be hot chocolate, FRÍO Gelato’s winter offerings are sure to please the crowd.
All of FRÍO’s locations (Andersonville, Lakeview, Evanston) are serving up the Hot Choco-lato – a take on hot chocolate made with melted chocolate gelato and steamed milk. I test drove the delectable beverage, and it was everything one can expect of gelato: rich, velvety smooth and oh, so chocolatey! Want to skip the sugar and syrups in your coffee? Try the Café-lato– coffee sweetened with your choice of gelato melted to perfection. I opted for Bailey’s flavor in my coffee, yum. What a brilliant idea! Honestly, who wouldn’t want ice cream in their coffee?
With a focus on artisanal flavors and seasonal ingredients, husband-and-wife owners Sebastián and Karla Koziura, along with Sebastián’s cousin, Dairy Consultant Enrique Schcolnik, have created an Argentine dessert experience unlike anything else in the entire city. Growing up in Buenos Aires, the cousins frequented “heladeriás” with their grandmother, and were surprised to find nothing like their favorite childhood treat in Chicago. FRÍO Gelato was born with the goal of creating an authentic experience, from the serving techniques to the flavor combinations. This passionate team is changing the way Chicagoans experience dessert.
Since its 2013 inception, the FRÍO Gelato team has dipped their way into the hearts of locals and visitors alike, swirling over 30 house-made flavors and paying homage to Argentine classics such as Dulce de Leche, Sambayón (egg custard with marsala wine), and Malbec con Frutos Rojos (Malbec wine with berries). Locally made from scratch using all-natural ingredients in an allergen-safe kitchen, FRÍO specializes in seasonally-rotating gelato and sorbet flavors, as well as specialty items including the Cucurucho(handcrafted waffle cone), Barquillo(handcrafted waffle bowl), Argentine Flight, Alfa-Lato (Alfajor gelato sandwich) and Ahogado (gelato drowned in espresso), among others.
FRÍO Gelato serves Chicagoland at three locations: Andersonville & Lakeview in Chicago proper, and Evanston.
