Indian Lakes Resort: So Close But Yet So Far

If you need an escape from the hustle and bustle of city life you don’t have to go far. Indian Lakes Resort is a quick 45 minutes from downtown Chicago and provides an inclusive get away experience that’s good for family, friends, or romance.

Indian Lakes Resort at dawnThe resort sits on 260 acres in the western suburb of Bloomingdale. With that much space you can bet there’s a golf course, and there is. The campus actually began in 1965 with two championship courses, and the Blackhawk Trace Golf Club just completed a $3 million renovation and includes three 9-hole layouts that can be booked year round. If your idea of golf includes windmills and bunkers they’ve got a miniature golf course, also open all year. Tennis courts, horseshoe pits and a sand volleyball court round out the traditional resort activities, as well as both indoor and outdoor pools and a fitness center. The on-site Spa Vargas is an independently-operated salon that offers the standard services, but they also offer massages with stones and shells and with bamboo sticks.

Indian Lakes has an unconventional feel which can be attributed to architect Don Erickson. A protegé of Frank Lloyd Wright’s, he used hexagons to create a hotel that defied the normal box-shaped rooms expected at hotels. The narrow corridors zig-zag away from the center and each room has large windows facing either the golf course or the atrium and boasts 10-foot ceilings. Hospitality suites have separate living areas, and there are also business suites and even penthouse suites for when you really want to spoil yourself.

There are several dining and nightlife options, from the casual Master’s Clubhouse to Izzy & Moe’s Speakeasy to Shiraz On The Water. The latter is a fine-dining restaurant complete with over 1,000 wine labels and cuisine that makes it a destination on its own (see Hungry Z’s review).

Lava Lamp at the Cave BarThe atrium is one of the most stunning features of the property. In the center is a “cave”, complete with water streaming down the exterior, that houses a cozy bar. The interior has the feel of a theme park lounge, with its lava lamps and the constant sound of falling water.

If you want to try it out for yourself, Indian Lakes Resort has a package that can help you enjoy the resort to its fullest. The Slumber Party Spa Package includes overnight accommodations, a massage or a facial at Spa Vargas, 10% off food and beverage and complimentary breakfast buffet. Prices on that package are $272 for two guests, $367 for three and $463 for four. Family-friendly packages include the Brookfield Zoo Adventure and Family Fun.

Full disclosure: The Local Tourist was invited to stay overnight and experience the spa, Shiraz On The Water, and the Master’s Clubhouse.
