Kilo Kai is Killer

I’m a rum drinker, and have been ever since my doctor “prescribed” rum and diet as my drink of choice. Seriously. I have sugar issues, so Dr. Bean (yes, seriously) suggested that as my cocktail.

I’ll admit that I haven’t been adventurous with my rum. For the last 10 years I’ve been pretty loyal to Bacardi Light, although occasionally I’ll go crazy and get Captain Morgan. Now, however, the new Kilo Kai has me convinced to switch.

It’s not because I was invited to a media tasting at Debonair Social Club, and then an RSVP-only concert at Double Door. (I like to think I’m not that easily swayed.) It’s not because it’s got a feisty logo, or because it’s being marketed to servers, bartenders, and musicians – people and lifestyles I’m intimately familiar with. It’s not because it’s made by a master blender in Curacao who’s a third generation rum guy, although that’s good to know. It’s not because, with the skateboard tape around the neck and the black bottle and the “no-cartoon-zone” attitude, it’s the “bad boy” of rum, and like most women I’m a sucker for the bad boy. Nope. I’m going to switch because it tastes good.

Even Bacardi Light, when poured too generously, gives me that alcohol shiver. Kilo Kai is smooth and a bit sweet. I can actually taste vanilla and cinnamon.

On second thought, maybe I shouldn’t switch. It could be dangerous.
