Local Musicians: Enter To Win a NARM Performance Slot

It’s a common adage that to be successful in business, it’s not what you know, it’s who you know. In the music field that is even more true. Social media tools like MySpace, Facebook and Twitter have enabled bands to reach a broader audience, but getting in front of the powers that be is still elusive.

This May Chicago is hosting the National Association of Recording Merchandisers convention. This is an enormous gathering of the movers and shakers in the recording world. Labels, producers, distributors and retailers congregate for a few intense days to learn about trends and innovations in the industry. The days are filled with workshops and panels and seminars, and the nights are filled with music.

Now any band or artist has the opportunity to play for this collection of the most influential players in the field. Both signed and unsigned acts can submit a song or video for the chance to play a 10-minute unplugged performance at the Opening Session. The winning act will also win registration for the NARM Music Business Crash Course, an intense two days helping independent artists navigate the brave new world of digital promotion, marketing, and commerce. Then they can attend the convention itself and take advantage of three days of meetings, hobnobbing, and connections.

The deadline for entry is February 12 at Midnight. Visit NARM’s website for complete information on the contest.
