Milagro at Mercadito

There is no shortage of excellent food in the City of the Big Shoulders. Eating out is often a tie between visiting an old favorite or trying something new. I had the pleasure of eating at Mercadito for the first time this week, a River North restaurant that has been around for about 5 years. They had a tequila tasting (just in time for Cinco de Mayo) featuring Milagro brand tequila. On hand was Milagro brand ambassador Jaime Salas, a tequila expert with no shortage of passion.

Featured were three special cocktails with Milagro tequila as the base ingredient and from there the drinks took a lovely turn.  First was the Ancho-rita, a fresh, clean margarita using a silver tequila, an ancho chile liqueur (more savory than hot), agave and fresh lime – that’s it.  Salt your rim or not, this is hands down the best margarita you’ll find north of the border.  Second was the Blushing Rose Martini (yes, martini) highlighting the Milagro reposado tequila, Lillet Rose, quince preserves (a small fruit resembling a pear), and lime juice.  This beverage was light and refreshing and would be perfect for a warm summer evening. Last served was the Fidelito (little Fidel), a cocktail inspired by the thought “what would Fidel Castro of the 30’s drink if he drank tequila.” Starting with Milagro reposado tequila once more, a dash of Pimms, lime juice, simple syrup, vanilla, bitters and garnished with lime. This special cocktail was designed by Mercadito’s own mixologist Dylan Stewart.

This fantastic beverage selection was accompanied by house-made guacamoles, two different types of cerviche, and three different flavors of tacos (carne, pollo, and pastor) nestled in house-made tacos.  The food was so fresh and flavorful; it was the perfect accompaniment to the amazing cocktails laid before us.

Mercadito is a must try. The wonderful Latin-inspired décor, delicious fresh food, and other interesting cocktails will turn this locale into a favorite place. Milagro tequila, a brand just under 20 years old, has quickly become a rising star in the world of tequila. Impassioned and enthusiastic ambassador Salas gave a marvelous presentation of the Milagro tequilas, and inspired his audience to create their own cocktails with this award-winning brand.
