I had the pleasure of visiting with board certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Lawrence Iteld, to learn more about his practice and himself as a Local Tourist. Little did I know, that I would learn a fun thing or two about myself along the way.
I have never stepped inside an office of a plastic surgeon before, but Dr. Iteld and his staff conducted themselves with the utmost poise and professionalism. I never felt nervous and was at ease the moment I walked in and received a friendly “hello” from his receptionist.
You see, I was born with a “birth defect” of sorts, I cannot move my forehead or eyebrows and I spoke with Dr. Iteld on options to help get my straight eyebrows lifted and arched. He suggested simple Botox injections or a brow lift. I don’t even have to go under the knife to get a look I want (with Botox).
With the season changing and winter beginning tomorrow, you might need a little pick-me-up, and Dr. Iteld is there to help. When I think of plastic surgery, I imagine only the big invasive surgeries, but there are many smaller, less invasive procedures to brighten your spirits, including a new injection that melts fat away and is perfect for removing double chins. How amazing is that?!

Interview with Dr. Iteld:
Janelle: Why did you get into this line of work?
Dr. Iteld: It was an interesting progression, I’ve always wanted to be a surgeon and when I encountered plastic surgery, it resonated with me and a lot of it were the end points. The fact that many other areas of surgery I encountered were technical exercises. How fast can you remove a gallbladder? Those kinds of things. Whereas for plastic surgery, it wasn’t how do you do an operation, it was how do you accomplish a goal? That creativity, that puzzle is what I really like, so it’s being able to sit down with my patients and say “Where do you want to be? I can see where you are now, but where do you want to be and how do we get you there, or at least how do we get you as close to your vision as possible?” And to me that’s what drove me to pursue this and one of the interesting things I’ve learned over the years is that you can’t just choose an area of medicine, the area of medicine also has to choose you. So you have to have the skills, personality and mindset to do it, as well as want to do it.
Janelle: What is your most popular procedure among men and among women?
Dr. Iteld: So overall, my numbers parallel to national numbers very closely. Those numbers are collected by the both of our societies, the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery and the American Society of Plastic Surgery. Hands down, number one, without question, it is Botox treatments in both men and women. We’re talking about 6 million treatments per year, nationally. The next would be the injectable treatments, Juvederm, Restylane, fillers, those are about one and a half million and then it really starts to drop off and the most common surgical cosmetic procedure would be breast augmentation and liposuction. They go back and forth. This year liposuction is number one with just over 300,000 one and breast augmentation just under 300,000 and they scale back from there. In my practice, Botox rules, it’s clearly number one, fillers are number two and on the surgical side, I’m actually doing more breast augmentation than liposuction and tummy tucks. In men it really does tend to correlate well, then again Botox and fillers are still very common for men, most men come in for gynecomastia questions to make their chest smaller as well as liposuction.
Janelle: Are there any new procedures or cutting edge techniques on the horizon?
Dr. Iteld: The nice thing about what we do is there’s a constant evolution of progression. Some are evolutionary and some are revolutionary. From the evolutionary stand point, over the past two years we’ve seen an influx of fillers and they’ve all been in the same families of what we’ve used before but slightly different formulations. The revolutionary is Kybella, which is a drug that dissolves fat, so we inject it. It’s not a replacement for surgery, it’ll be for someone with more subtle areas.
Janelle: What makes your office unique?
Dr. Iteld: Our practice is much more designed for the individual satisfaction, rather than the outward perception satisfaction. I care more about my patients being happy.
Janelle: Do you have any success stories from your patients?
Dr. Iteld: A gentleman treated himself to gynecomastia surgery (chest reduction) for his 40th birthday and he went to Florida with his friends and was able to take off his shirt at the beach in front of his friends for the first time.
