On October 29th, the Godfrey Hotel was haunted, for its second year in a row and I was fortunately able to attend. I|O Godfrey and Chicago Scene presented the return of “Haunted Hotel” at the Godfrey. A night full of screams around every corner, creatures lurking in the shadows and Chicago’s best dressed is what you got at the Haunted Hotel. The Godfrey was thrown a curve ball, thanks to the Chicago Cubs World Series Run and they ran with it. The Haunted Hotel was set to open at 9pm, but with the game starting at 7pm they opened early so everyone planning to attend could see the game in its entirety. There was even a prize awarded for Best Cubs Attire.
The velvet ropes parted and sexy ghouls and goblins made their way to the 4th floor. Upon arrival they were greeted by David S. Pumpkin and his staff of skeletons and then proceeded to find the perfect viewing spot just in time for the first pitch. An unseasonably warm October night in Chicago lead way to an open rooftop and hundreds of costume dressed party goers ready to have a “hauntingly” good time.
The entire staff from bus boys to bartenders got in on the haunting fun and dressed up. The mysterious haunting didn’t stop on the 4th floor, the fun continued with a quick trip to the 5th floor. The ghoulish elevator operator with a stitched shut mouth ushered guests on and then directed them off at the 5th floor when the doors opened on to the Hall of Horror. Stepping out into a dimly lit hall on to a blood red carpet we walked towards the terrifying highlight of the Haunted Hotel’s Hall of Horror. Once in the main hallway, guests could wander among the 10+ uniquely frightening transformed rooms at their own risk or stop for a spooky cocktail at the bar. Rooms were transformed into gruesome, creepy, and horrifying scenes. You could observe an exorcism, exercise your inner freak in a bondage den or relive your childhood within a playroom full of dolls to name just a few of the eerie rooms. There were haunted souls wandering, stalking and scaring guests as they explored the rooms in the Hall of Horror. The souls weren’t just trapped just in the Hall of Horror; they followed guests to the 4th floor as well. In the lounge of the I|O Godfrey you could watch zombies performing an autopsy.
Throughout the night there was Halloween fun for all no matter what your scare tolerance might have been. There was no doubt in the room why I|O Godfrey was awarded 2016 Nightclub & Bar Event of the Year Award.
