Everyone loves a good chef’s competition and the culinary talent behind Chicago Gourmet is no different. This summer, Iron Chef winner Chef Jose Garces and Chicago Gourmet will bring together some of the city’s favorite chefs for the first annual Paella Cook-Off at Mercat a la Planxa on Monday, June 23.
The Spanish dish is considered by some Spaniards to be their national dish, and while the exact ingredients vary, traditional paella combines rice, vegetables and either seafood or either chicken, rabbit or sausage.
As you prepare your taste buds for an evening of Sangria and paella, know that this competition will be unique in that none of the participants currently focus on Spanish style cooking. The diverse group of chefs includes:
- Jess De Guzman, Sunda New Asian
- Kevin Hickey, Bottlefork Bar & Kitchen
- Zoe Schor, Ada St.
- Guillermo Tellez, Mercadito Hospitality
- Aaron Thebault, Girl and the Goat
- Tom Van Lente, TWO
Beyond the paella samplings and sangria bar, the evening will include Spanish-inspired cocktails, beers from Spain. The VIP ticket includes a meet and greet with Chef Garces, Spanish hor d'oeuvres and a specialty cocktail.
A portion of proceeds benefiting the Illinois Restaurant Educational Foundation (IRAEF), a non-profit organization (501 c3) dedicated to building the future of Illinois' hospitality workforce.
- When: Monday, June 23 (7-10pm)
- Where: Mercat a la Planxa (South Loop)
- Cost: GA - $75 pp // VIP - $95 (purchase here)
