In celebration of Iceland’s centennial, Iceland Naturally invites Chicagoans to immerse themselves in Icelandic culture through Taste of Iceland. Returning for its third year, Taste of Iceland is back for eagerly awaiting locals with a four-day program throughout the city taking place Thursday, April 5 – Sunday, April 8.
Over the course of the four-day celebration and festival, local Chicagoans have the opportunity to experience:
- Authentic Icelandic cuisine at Baptiste & Bottle
- Learn how to craft quintessential Icelandic cocktails at The Dawson
- Enjoy the annual Icelandic-Chicago Reykjavik Calling concert at Martyrs'
- Partake in an Icelandic design lecture discussing the intersection of culture and design at Marshall’s Landing
- Attend an Icelandic short-film screening at Music Box
The four-day festival lends an activity for the foodie, the imbiber, the music maven, the art and design enthusiast, and the cinema aficionado in everyone.
For the Foodie: Taste of Iceland Pop-up Menu at Baptiste & Bottle (Thursday, April 5- Sunday, April 8)
Chef Georg Arnar Halldórsson, one of Iceland’s most prestigious culinary experts, brings an Icelandic culinary adventure to Chicago along with his own culinary emphasis on New Nordic cuisine through the Taste of Iceland pop-up menu at Baptiste & Bottle. Chef Georg invites Chicagoans to prepare plates and palates for an unforgettable experience at the Conrad Chicago’s Baptiste & Bottle featuring a four-course prix fixe menu in collaboration with the restaurant’s Executive Chef James Lintelmann. The exclusive menu is available Thursday, April 5 - Sunday, April 8 as part of the annual Taste of Iceland in Chicago festival. Also available to complement the culinary experience, Baptiste & Bottle is offering two cocktails created by Teitur Ridderman Schiöth, one of Iceland’s premier mixologists and winner of the National Brennivín Cocktail Competition in 2016. The exclusive cocktail menu features Iceland’s favorite vodka, Reyka Vodka, and Brennivín, the quintessential Icelandic spirit. For the Imbiber: Taste of Iceland Kickoff Cocktail Class at The Dawson (Tuesday, April 3 from 6 – 8 p.m.)
Savoring the flavors of Iceland goes beyond the plate, with the Taste of Iceland Kickoff Cocktail Class held in partnership with The Dawson, Reyka Vodka, and Brennivín. Imbibers are invited to shake, stir, and sip Icelandic cocktails through a demonstration and hands-on tutorial led in tandem by The Dawson’s beverage team, Reyka’s National Ambassador and accomplished mixologist Trevor Schneider, and one of Iceland’s premier mixologists and winner of the National Brennivín Cocktail Competition in 2016, Teitur Ridderman Schiöth. Held at The Dawson from 6 – 7 p.m. followed by a meet-and-greet from 7 – 8 p.m. on Tuesday, April 3, the class is complimentary with registration here. For the Music Maven: Reykjavik Calling (Saturday, April 7, from 7 – 11 p.m.)
In partnership with Martyrs’, the Icelandic-American concert known as Reykjavik Calling in collaboration with WLUW features Iceland artists JFDR, whose first full length album, was co-produced by Laurie Anderson, Yoko Ono, and Tom Waits, and Sturla Atlas, who has performed at just about every big stage Iceland has to offer, including opening for two nights on Justin Bieber’s Purpose Tour stop in the country. Reykjavik Calling will also feature a Chicago band, which will be announced in the coming weeks. This free concert takes place Saturday, April 7 from 7 – 11 p.m. at Martyrs’; interested attendees are encouraged to RSVP here to reserve their spot. For the Art and Design Enthusiast: Iceland’s Thriving Design and Architectural Scene (Thursday, April 5, 6 – 8 p.m.)
In partnership with Marshall’s Landing and in celebration of the 10th anniversary of Iceland’s most important annual design festival, DesignMarch, which covers all fields of design including architecture, graphic design, fashion, furniture and product design, Taste of Iceland invites you to immerse yourself in Iceland’s thriving design and architectural scene with a talk hosted by Halla Helgadóttir, Managing Director of the Iceland Design Centre. Enjoy an evening of refreshments and network with Iceland’s creative community during this complimentary event as part of this year’s Taste of Iceland in Chicago program. For the Cinema Aficionado: Shortfish, Iceland’s Premier Short Film Festival (Saturday, April 7, 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.)
The Icelandic film industry’s premier festival, Stockfish, is screening its short film program on Saturday, April 7 at Music Box Theatre in Chicago’s Lakeview neighborhood. The short film division of the Stockfish festival, aptly dubbed Shortfish, focuses on highlighting up-and-coming Icelandic filmmakers. The Shortfish screening at Music Box Theatre will feature six short films and will run for approximately 90 minutes. Admission is free on a first-come, first-served basis. Interested attendees are encouraged to register here to reserve a spot. The films are not recommended for children, although there are no age restrictions for this event.
