Digital downloads are great, but there’s nothing quite like the sound of vinyl. There’s definitely nothing like stepping into an independent record store, browsing the bins, and finding an old favorite or a new gem. Celebrating this is Record Store Day, an annual event across the world that highlights the “unique culture of a record store and the special role these independently owned stores play in their communities.”
To celebrate there are also special vinyl and CD releases by hundreds of artists, available exclusively for the third Saturday in April. Stores all over will be hosting Record Store Day events in Chicago. There’s a list of participating stores on the Record Store Day website, and below we’ve got some themed events:
This Chicago-based deejay and live music company is honoring the day with all-wax events every day this week. Last night they were at the Cage + Aquarium studios, and here’s where you can find them the rest of the week:

In addition to hearing Cage + Aquarium at their Wicker Park location, both that store and the Andersonville shop are offering 10% off food and drink to anyone who shows a record store receipt. You can spend the whole day enjoying the grooves at this South Loop bar. They’ve got shows in the Music Joint, the Rock Club, and the Roof Top and doors open at 12pm with Great Moments in Vinyl tribute band.
