Just how do those sommeliers do it? Picking out green, black and white pepper, getting a hint of green apple or black cherry or ripe raspberries, all from a bunch of fermented grapes. To the uninitiated it can seem like a mystical, magical art. In large part it is, and world class sommeliers have educated, finely honed palates that are years in the making.
You can get a taste for the skill at Fulton’s On The River. They’re hosting “Sommelier for a Day” on December 2, featuring the wines of Casa Lapostolle. Southern Wine and Spirits Certified Sommelier Evan Abramowitz will guide you through a tasting of four of the winery’s varietals paired with seasonal hors d’oeuvres from Executive Chef Kevin Schulz. The event is only $15 and you can continue your “training” at home with the option to purchase any of the wines you’ve sampled. Call 312.822.0100 to make reservations.
